Tequila (as we know it today) was born of Aztec mythology. Powerful emotions of love, passion, and redemption frame the story of its origin. An ancient tale of a beautiful goddess and a forbidden king.
The elders from the Aztec region still spin the tale for eager ears. Legend has it that the first agave plant was born from the buried heart of the Aztec goddess Mayahuel (known for her fertility). They say that she was the most beautiful goddess in all of the sky and beloved of the stars. Mayahuel and KingQuetzalcoatl fell madly in love. Alas, their love was forbidden by Mayahuel’s grandmother Tzintzimitl an evil goddess. She vowed to do everything within her power to separate the lovers and Mayahuel was slain. The stars took Mayahuel and buried her on earth.
The king, whose tears poured over Mayahuel’s grave was blessed by the gods with the sweet nectar of her heart’s blood pouring from the agave plant. This elixir helped soothe the king’s sorrow and became an integral part of Aztec ritual offerings to the gods, ceremonies and traditions.
